It is still raining and we are still mulching. I hope the mulching will all be finished by this weekend.

While taking a skeg aboot the yard I found two different columbines in bloom. They look pretty puny.

Where the Orange Blossoms Grow

Update: As of April, 1020 I am again writing this blog, but it will focus on my efforts to transform the yard and beds in my new-to-me house into something that welcomes me when I come home.

I had a lucky childhood. We were a family of modest means; today we use the term “working class poor” to describe families like mine. I thought that everyone was like my family because in our neighborhood of 580-square-foot homes, each with one tiny bathroom, we all lived similar lives. None of us ever went hungry though the fare was plain—oatmeal or Wheatena for breakfast, peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, meatloaf and mashed potatoes for supper or fresh-caught fish. I grew up on the west coast of Florida in a little place called Gulfport where I spent idyllic days on the beach. (I never saw snow until my mid-twenties when I moved to the mountains of Virginia.) So, what made my childhood lucky? The joy of my early years was largely due to the multitude of rich experiences and adventures my friends and I had in the pre-TV era of the early 1950s; we devised our own fun, and, oh, what fun we had! My best friend and I went to the beach every single day possible from the last week in February through October. This blog is dedicated to the stories of my youth (and perhaps some from my old age) as well as the tales of other family members. If, by chance, you are reading this and you, too, had the good fortune to grow up on the Suncoast more than fifty years ago, you might find yourself humming along to the song that every child of that era learned the moment he or she stepped one foot inside a first grade classroom:

I want to wake up in the morning where the orange blossoms grow,
Where the sun comes peepin’ into where I’m sleepin’ and the songbirds say hello.
I want to wander through the orange groves where the children used to roam
And go drifting back to Florida my everlasting home.
